Active Challenge for Friday-Local Hero Day-FEEL GOOD FRIDAY

29th Apr 2021

For Friday's Active Challenge and to mark Local Hero Day, we have nominated two very important and special Local Heroes.

First up is a former pupil of St. Teresa's National School-Nelvin Appiah, and brother of Doreen who is currently in 6th class. Nelvin took part in the school Athletics competition after Master Colm Harte encouraged him to take part. Luckily for him, he did and found his love and passion for jumping and sprinting.  Nelvin is making strides within Irish Athletics each year at hurdling, long jump and the high jump.

When he was U16, Nelvin won 5 gold medals in relay, 200m, High Jump and Long Jump at his very first competition at Provincial level. In September 2020, he ran an unbelievable 14.55 seconds to win the 110 metre Junior Men's Hurdles at the National Championships. We are so proud of Nelvin and shows that if you really want something and if you are willing to work, you can achieve anything. We are really excited to try your challenge and look forward to welcoming you to our school in the future.

Next up we have another talented local hero, swimmer Darragh Greene. Darragh will be representing his county and country in the Olympics in Tokyo this coming summer. Darragh has been swimming since the age of 8. He is making huge strides within Irish Swimming. Darragh will become the 49th Irish swimmer in the Olympics.

Only recently at the Swim Ireland Irish National Team Trials in the National Aquatic Centre, Darragh who had already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, set a new Irish senior record of 59.76 in the 100m breaststroke. He has the Irish record for the 50m, 100m and 200m breastroke.  He is hoping to be a part of the first men's medley relay to represent Ireland when they try to qualify at the European Championships in Budapest.  Darragh took time out of his busy schedule to set our whole school community, children , teachers and parents a very fun and worthwhile challenge. Try it out and see how you get on.

We are very grateful to have two fantastic local sportsmen for our children to look up to. Thank you for being our "Local Hero" for Active School Week 2021.
