Athletics
We have a long tradition of Athletics in our school. From early September, children are given a chance to try out for our Cross Country teams. We are very lucky to have Rita Moran (parent) helping our cross-country runners and also dedicated teachers from the staff. They train at lunch time, three times a week and Rita Moran also comes in on Mondays from 2pm to 3pm. We are very lucky to be able to enter at least four cross country teams at different levels and also a mix of boys and girls. We compete in the school finals of Longford cross country. In recent years, our teams qualified for the Connacht cross country finals. Both teams put in a tremendous effort and represented our school with great pride and enthusiasm. Sports Day is another big day for everyone in St. Teresa’s National school. We hold sprints, relays and novelty races such as egg and spoon, sack race, 3 legged races as well as a mothers’ and fathers’ race. There is always a great atmosphere with a huge turnout from parents on the day.
We also enter another athletics competition held within Longford. Here the children compete in sprints, javelin, high jump, long jump, hurdles, relay as well as long distance stamina running. Once again it is a great opportunity for our children to try out different competitions.
